Advanced Cryogenic Engineering

The Center for Research on Integrative Structural Proteomics (CRISP) at QBI UCSF integrates advanced mass spectrometry, structural biology, and proteomics to map how proteins assemble, interact, and function in health and disease.

By combining cross-linking mass spectrometry (XL-MS), native MS, top-down MS, quantitative proteomics, and cryo-EM/ET, CRISP analyzes molecular architecture across scales—from individual proteoforms and protein interfaces to intact complexes and cellular networks.

Through a blend of technology development and collaborative biomedical research, CRISP uncovers how mutations, post-translational modifications, and disease-associated changes remodel protein networks—driving new opportunities for therapeutic discovery.

Learn More

CRISP seeks to understand how protein interaction networks are organized and remodeled in health and disease. By integrating structural proteomics, mass spectrometry, cryo-EM and cryo-ET, cellular imaging, and computational approaches, CRISP researchers will:

  • Map protein interaction networks at scale across diverse cellular states.

  • Resolve protein interfaces, complex architectures, stoichiometry, and proteoforms.

  • Uncover how genetic variants and molecular changes remodel protein interactomes.

  • Bridge structural proteomics with cryo-EM/ET and multi-scale cellular imaging.

  • Drive therapeutic innovation by translating molecular architecture into drug targets.

The team behind CRISP brings together expertise in structural biology, proteomics, computation, and artificial intelligence to uncover how proteins and cells function in health and disease. Their work integrates complementary technologies and large-scale datasets to better understand disease mechanisms and identify new opportunities for therapeutic development and precision medicine.
